Ski-In and Ski-Out

Christie's International January 24, 2025

Ski chalets had their humble beginnings as the rough summer quarters of alpine herders—what one might call trudge-up, ski-down access.

The first real ski resorts, such as Davos and St. Moritz, grew up around popular summer resorts. And my, how they’ve grown! The Rockies snowpack and its black diamonds, bumps, steeps, drops, bowls, moguls, and chutes are ready. The legendary pistes are corduroy-groomed in the Alps, awaiting their schussers, bunnies, and boomers.

In this Luxury Defined collection of homes, we go off-piste to spotlight five luxury ski chalets (and their cozy, après-ski interiors) in chic Alpine destinations and the thrill-seekers’ ski meccas of the Rocky Mountains. It may be a bright, crisp winter, but it’s all downhill from here!

1. Residence at Cascade Ridge in Big Sky, Montana

This log cabin-inspired residence is in the private Cascade Ridge community in Montana’s Big Sky Resort, famous for its vast skiable terrain with a variety of challenging powder runs—and few crowds.

The 4,550-square-foot home is set into the mountainside, allowing residents to ski from the front door to the base of Big Sky Mountain Village.

The multi-level floor plan offers six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, a great room, a family room, and a large gourmet kitchen. Après-ski amenities include a hidden, speakeasy-style bar and a mountain-view deck with a private hot tub.

Also included is partial ownership of the Cascade Ridge Lodge, a private club with a heated indoor pool, fitness center, spa, and après-ski lounge.

2. The Costapiana Refuge in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

The Costapiana Refuge is perched 5,282 feet above sea level on the slopes of Monte Antelao, the highest peak in Italy’s eastern Dolomites.

There are three floors of heated, fully furnished, turnkey living space with seven bedrooms, eight full bathrooms, a modern kitchen, a grande terrasse, private balconies, and several log-burning fireplaces.

Over the years, the Costa Piana Refuge has served as a popular destination for skiers, alpinists, and hikers, offering comfortable accommodations and a restaurant and bar.

The slopes of the Dolomiti Superski circuit are all nearby: Cortina d'Ampezzo, host city of the 2026 Winter Olympics, is 20 miles away. Closer still is San Vito Ski Area, with its pristine pistes and bunny slopes. Another draw? Venice is just two hours south.

3. Contemporary Ski House in Breckenridge, Colorado

This contemporary ski house in Breckenridge Ski Resort has direct access to Peak 8 and its Imperial Express SuperChair—the highest ski lift in North America (elevation 12,840 feet).

The interior has a mountain-modern aesthetic with barnwood accents, Lutron lighting, and a warm, earth-toned palette. The home is smart-wired throughout, ensuring seamless connectivity and control. The oxygen enrichment system adds an extra layer of comfort for those adjusting to the high-altitude environment.

The great room, with its double-height windows and raised bio-fuel fireplace, flows into the formal dining space and contemporary chef’s kitchen. There are six bedrooms in all, each with an en suite bath, as well as a bonus room.

An elevator connects all three floors, from the lower-level ski room to the rooftop deck. There’s also a slope-side patio with a firepit, an oversized hot tub, and a panoramic view of the Tenmile Range.

4. Chalet Miaz in Le Grand Bornand, Haute-Savoie, France

The traditional Alpine farmhouses of France’s Haute-Savoie region are the inspiration for Chalet Miaz, a 21st-century ski lodge in Le Grand-Bornand, a picture-postcard mountain village and premier ski resort in France’s Aravis Range.

The heart of the 3,566-square-foot home is a two-story living room with an integrated kitchen, a huge dining room, a monumental fireplace, and sliding glass doors out to the southeast-facing terrace.

A floating staircase accesses the upper level, where five en suite bedrooms await, and the luxurious lower level, with a spa, sauna, hammam, lounge, wine cellar, laundry room, and a three-car garage.

The property includes a traditional mazot—a small wooden outbuilding with self-contained accommodations for guests or staff.

5. Luxury Chalet in Arosa Lenzerheide, Switzerland

This ski chalet is in one of Switzerland’s largest Alpine resorts, Arosa Lenzerheide in the canton of Graubünden.

Renovated throughout, the property was designed to accommodate large groups in utmost convenience and comfort, with spacious living and dining rooms, a terrace for outdoor entertaining, a heated ski room, and a three-car garage.

The living spaces are currently configured as two beautifully renovated apartments—for private use or rental income. Each residence is fitted with the highest quality finishes, including luxurious bathrooms, a modern kitchen, and the latest in-home technologies.

A beautiful, wooded garden overlooking the Alps completes the picture.

“Tis the season!” Chalet skiing starts here.
